Hands-on Mechanical Engineer/Aerospace Engineer

Postion ID: 167

Location: Atlanta, GA, USA

Position Type:

• Full-time
• BS degree required
• 5+ years of relevant experience preferred
• Position is available immediately. Relocation assistance will be provided, if necessary.

The SpaceWorks group, including our subsidiary companies Terminal Velocity Aerospace and Blink Astro, is seeking a mechanically-inclined "hands-on" engineer to support prototype design and production of satellites, spacecraft, and rocket systems. The position is full-time and will be located at our facilities in Atlanta, GA. A competitive salary and benefits package will be provided.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a hands-on “builder” to support broad space systems design and prototyping activities at our main office in Atlanta, GA. The SpaceWorks group has a small in-house machine shop and frequently works with third-party suppliers to support our satellite, reentry vehicle, and rocket projects. This is more than a machinist or shop leader position. We are looking for analytical and design skills as well. We are seeking an early to mid-career engineer to manage those end-to-end prototyping processes for a broad set of ongoing hardware projects. If you are the type of design engineer who also wants to get your hands dirty and actually build and assemble flight systems, we’d like to hear from you. This position is available to US citizens or permanent residents only.

Required Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related academic field of study
  • Hands-on experience with machine shop operations and equipment such as mills, drill presses, sanders, lathes, miter saws, curing ovens, vacuum chambers, etc.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping and manufacturing techniques such as 3D printers and additive manufacturing
  • Analytical design capabilities and familiarity with common CAD, structural analysis, and thermal analysis software programs
  • Experience managing interactions with third-party vendors and suppliers for unique part manufacturing (quoting, selection, review, acceptance)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous experience managing machine shop or invention studio operations
  • Hands-on personality with a desire to build prototypes and flight hardware
  • Knowledge of bonding techniques used in composites manufacturing
  • Knowledge of control systems, actuators, and related mechanisms
  • Specific experience with SolidEdge, ANSYS, and FLUENT software programs
  • Interest in space and hypersonic systems
  • Interest in high temperature structural and thermal protection materials
